So I didin't think I was the one with the problems, but I seem to be the only one with die off! Was fatigued, nasuous, and had diarrhea tonight. Day two of full GAPS. I'm wondering if maybe I should be a little more lenient with myself to ease into it because I'm nursing a baby. He's 10 mos old and big for his age, but he doesn't eat much for solids yet.
I'm drinking chicken broth and giving my belly a chance to feel better. My two year old is begging for more chicken broth.
I was thinking of doing the intro until I had some die off. I mean, I've been doing lots of probiotic foods for years and we consume such small amt. of sugar, etc..., but we did a lot of homemade bread (prepared properly).
Also wondering if anyone knows of any cases of someone curing Tourrette's with GAPS?

Ah, fresh baked bread Smile
Even when prepared properly, though, it's going to definitely bring up your sugar content, plus, for GAPS patients, it's just not an easy food to digest. If you're experiencing die-off already, you should probably ease into intro lol. Also, it's not recommended to do intro while breastfeeding because as you experience die-off, toxins will also get into your breastmilk. I'm interested in what you're saying about probiotics. How much are you taking a day? That could well be why you're experiencing such intense die-off. As far as the Tourrette's goes, I couldn't give you an answer one way or the other, but there is a chapter on epilepsy in Gut and Psychology Syndrome, and it briefly mentions Tourrette's. Basically the chapter says the the vast majority of seizures are due to deficiencies in B vitamins, folic acid, etc, and that going on GAPS largely resolves these issues.

Back to the probiotics, though, how much are you taking right now? Even if you had a lot before the diet, you should basically start from scratch and slowly reintroduce them, as you will become more sensitive to them as your gut heals and is more efficient with less difficult digestion.

So, I had two kids throw up before bed last night. They were the two who had a good amount of yogurt with me for snack yesterday AND had a bunch of chicken broth at dinner. Guess I'll back off on the probiotics. I'm still feeling crummy. Not excited about doing this at the moment as I felt decent before.

Hang in there! seriously, start off with like a teaspoon of yogurt a DAY. Wait a couple of days for your system to quit dying off so much, then increase the dose slowly. When doing intro, follow the steps for introducing dairy in case any of you are actually sensitive to it. Once you start GAPS, you find all sorts of sensitivities you didn't know about before. I bet after doing some healing on GAPS, you'll realize that things you didn't really notice before or think were curable are getting better. See Conditions Addressed. Many report more stable moods and energy to take care of kids. Personally, I would be happy if my only improvements were an increase in energy and a more stable mood. Also, this isn't to scare you or anything, but my mom (who was already diabetic, depressed, overweight and generally in bad shape by the time I was seven) didn't develop rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia (which has basically debilitated her in the absence of some sort of pain relief) until 5-6 years later. I'm not saying that you will develop all of those things in 5 years, as you say you are feeling decent now, but I also look at GAPS as a long-term, low-risk investment better than any health insurance plan. Oh, and when die-off is too intense, try activated charcoal. It's supposed to be a life saver. Also, see this post.

Hahaha, that would be a no. BUT I have read every single GAPS Guide post from the categories Beyond Food to Detecting Food Issues, and am working on Eating Gaps right now. I've also read a good chunk of Gut and Psychology Syndrome (I think I'm in part 2 right now), and I spend a lot of time on the support group forums. So in a way, I feel like I know a lot of people who have done GAPS. I hope to have some real experiences in a few months that I can share. (Perhaps we will be switching roles very soon Wink )

We have fallen off the bandwagon and are back to eating some straches. I'm keeping most grains out, but I can't handle any die-off when I have a baby still waking me at night and am homeschooling my oldest two kids AND directing our new homeschool group dealing with tuition, buying supplies, etc.... Let me know how it goes for you.

Hang in there! I just got the GAPS guide book yesterday and read through it, and she has a great structure on preparing for GAPS and easing into it. Maybe you should "start over" or find your place in the easing in model and continue from there? I'm second guessing myself now, too. Should I wait to start and just move with caution, starting with just one meal a day for a few weeks? To be honest, I can't say that I've been able to do that yet. I think I still have some work to do before I can completely commit. I'm going to start by gathering a bunch of bones and just keeping them in the freezer like she said. That would be an EXCELLENT step for me, considering I have none. I'm also thinking of making a thrift store trip to look for cool finds like really good knives, and if I'm really really lucky, maybe even a juicer. I've got my thermos, sort of stock pot, cutting board (though I really should find a good one, I have a plastic one. Perhaps something teak?), and I'll try to get an immersion blender after all of my books are paid for. Grains are REALLY hard to cut out. I would suggest replacing the carbs somehow with something else. That hamburger helper recipe that I mentioned in the blog was easy to eat without added starch, as was the zucchini variation.

I'd also like to apologize if I sounded pompous or overconfident before. One of my first bits of GAPS wisdom obtained from actual experience is that it is much much easier said than done. But I trust sources like Baden and other support group moms and patients who say that it is a lot easier to handle and less tempting to cheat once you've managed a couple of weeks. Maybe the best we can do is structure our cheating. Don't call it cheating. Say, "I'm eating this food because I'm not actually on GAPS yet. I am PREPARING for GAPS, and I am going to phase this food out slowly." Practice thinking about the food as something you would rather not eat. I don't even like the idea of adding sugar to my food or drink anymore. When I made cookies for a potluck, I made sure I was allergic to the ingredients so I wouldn't be tempted (cookies are a well-known vice for me. It's best not to tempt myself with them, GAPS or no GAPS).

And this particular piece of advice I am giving to myself as much as anyone: GO THROUGH THE STEPS OUTLINED IN THE GAPS GUIDE FOR INTRODUCING GAPS. I have a feeling it will save a lot of heartache.

I'm thinking about the fact that I have a knife, and a thought occurred to me: how do you guys peel butternut squash????
I broke my potato peeler doing that.

No worries, you didn't sound pompous, just inexperienced. Part of me is just wondering if it's worth doing at all because we don't have any severe symptoms and especially since only one has any intestinal issues at all. He's mildly constipated and I think it's partially due to the fact that he's too busy thinking and playing to take the time to go. I tell him to go every day and he does. If I don't tell him, he goes in his pants (just a little) and he's seven years old!
I guess I just didn't realize how hard it would be to cook that way for SIX people or that we would all be hungry all the time or that I would have a terrible taste in my mouth or that it would make the two year old constipated.
Re: peeling butternut squash. I use a good quality peeler or I just bake it at 325 whole for a long time and then cut it and remove the seeds and scoop out the flesh.

Well, the way I see it, if you had a bad reaction, your body probably isn't in as good a shape as it could be. If you're planning on ever having more children, that could be an issue as well--you want your kids to all be healthy. Plus, there is no guarantee that as you get older, you won't experience more symptoms such as arthritis, etc. Anyone that has really bad arthritis will tell you that it's not very fun. You might be surprised at how much better you feel and how much more energetic if you give it a try. I'm sort of at a point where I think everyone should give it a sporting chance.

One thing I keep reading is that with GAPS children, you are more likely to get constipation and #2 accidents because other than being busy playing, etc, a lot of them are afraid to poop. they often associate it with pain. They are proved right when they wait themselves into constipation.

I know what you mean about cooking for six people. I only have to cook for two, and only one strictly GAPS. It's still hard when I'm tired and have school. When I do cook for six people, it can take all day (keeping in mind that when I DO cook for six, it's usually a special occasion complicated food) That said, cooking for 20-50 people didn't take me that long when I had a partner. It took two to three hours, give or take, and the time flew. If I had been cooking just one thing, it would have taken 1 hour of prep plus one apr one hour cooking. With that in mind, If I just make big batches, I know I can probably cook for the whole week on an off day. Do you have a big freezer where you can prepare large stews and stocks and freeze them into a couple family size portions? I know it's a little less fun to do in theory, but if you have the space, it can definitely be worth it. It doesn't take as long to cook for 18 people once than it does to cook for 6 people thrice. You don't even have to eat the same thing for three days. Cook one week, take one off. Or something. If you realize you need more food, you have extras for the next day. I should really try it before I advise it, but I am going to give it a shot. I would be much more willing to heat food up than cook all the time. I just had a thought. Has anyone seen a cornbread recipe for GAPS? like with lima or almond flour or something? I could totally survive on dressing. It includes chicken broth and meat, plus bell peppers and other goodies, so I bet you could really make it healthy. Plus, dressing freezes well. Sure, no cranberry sauce, but sacrifices MUST be made. Smile

Am I having die off? Empty
PostSubject: Re: Am I having die off?   Am I having die off? Icon_minitimeSun Sep 01, 2013 9:08 pm

Well, ladies, I am a GAPS veteran as well as a long time survivor of chronic fatigue with two children. Here is my take on the GAPS diet:
Seven yo's with toilet issues (bedwetting, constipation, holding it too long) generally have an underlying health issue that causes it - without them, it doesn't take reminding - it just happens naturally. I was shocked at how many of our behavioral problems were caused by food issues, too. If you eat broth and yogurt and have diarrhea, you have some kind of gut dysbiosis that can be helped with GAPS or your food source is suspect (hidden chemicals or allergens). Once you've healed your gut, you can eat as much broth and probiotic-rich foods you like and you won't have issues.

You will be ravenous in the beginning, but that will calm down as you go along. Your body is starving for nutrients and healthy fats (if you eat any processed foods at all - milk and baby carrots are processed foods) and GAPS reduces the static so you can really listen to your body. I think of it as your body getting excited about and craving the healing foods it has been needing. 8^)

Anyway, for survival, you need to get into the habit of making huge batches of everything. We had the same basic soup for days, but varied side dishes to keep us sane. I always make a ton of broth and freeze part, make soup from part and keep some for drinking. You can simmer veggies in broth, but serve them separate from the soup to "fool" yourself into feeling variety and once you can have eggs, you can find exciting ways to add them, too. Really, it will be boring in the beginning no matter what you do, so you might as well save your energy (die-off can be exhausting) and just eat the same soup every meal. If you have the energy and want to get fancy, make a new soup every couple of days and put some into the freezer. Pretty soon, you will have a variety to choose from each day.

I won't lie, GAPS is hard, but you will feel so much better for it. I say enlist relatives (husbands, older children, parents, siblings) to help you in the beginning. Cooking for six people using the GAPS protocol is a full time job and that doesn't even take into consideration finding chemical-free, pure sources of meat and bones, doing household chores, and raising children. If your 9yo generally doesn't help in the kitchen, place him in front of the sink with a produce brush and a pile of veggies and get him started. If your husband has never helped you cook, park him at the cutting board with a pile of produce. If you have a sibling nearby, arrange to get their help cooking soup and putting stuff in the freezer one afternoon. If you had to go into the hospital, you would get that kind of help from family, and this is just preventative measures to prevent hospitalizations - ask for help.
